AMBI JIJI'S RETIREMENT   (30 min)

Ambi Jiji always planted her crops on soil where forests have been burnt. This jhum field would then be abandoned and left to regenerate into a forest and a new one burnt. Increasingly jhum fields are being turned into orchards which provide cash and food security. Through Ambi Jiji and her daughters, we see the passing of a way of life in a remote village in Meghalaya.

What happens when remote, isolated mountain communities come face to face with globalization? Jardhar gaon, a village in the Hemval valley of Garhwal, led an isolated, egalitarian existence until a series of events forced it, into joining the market economy. This short documentary, based entirely on local perspectives, reflects on the process of change - what triggers the shift to modernisation and what impact it has on the personal, social and environmental spaces.

The Film is a journey into India's food heritage and the biodiversity of its crops. It delves into the reasons for the shrinking of this diversity and the homogenisation of our food preferences. The journey also takes the protagonist into a search for the larger repercussions of this homogenisation of tastes and demands - the health ramifications and the effects on farming, soil and cropping patterns and the ecology.

Every 48 years, the people of Mizoram anticipate a famine they know they can’t avoid. Governments have been brought down, a separate state has come into existence and leaders have lost their powers because of this phenomenon.  Mautam, which means famine associated with the mass dying of bamboo, is a twin curse that has the potential to devastate the entire area.  Superstitions, politics, science and agriculture all come together to make Mautam.
