Lal Ded, (14th century, Kashmir), was a young woman of seventeen years, of humble origins, who went on to become the greatest living poet and mystic in her own life time. The journey of her life spun several myths and legends which continue to resonate in the valley of Kashmir to the present day. Loved and revered by both the Hindus and the Muslims of Kashmir, her life was one of constant transgressions, challenging political dogmas and religious fundamentalism. Her life and her poetry became one of the most powerful definitions of freedom of an individual - both political and personal. Her presence, as the naked, wandering mystic continues to mesmerise and engage, surviving the time span of seven hundred years, right up to the present day.
